Our guide to Cushion cut diamonds
Our tips for finding the Cushion cut diamond meant just for you.
Cushion cut diamonds are squared diamonds with cut or rounded corners. These softened corners give this diamond cut its well-known pillow-like shape and name. Cushion cut diamonds feature brilliant cut facets. This contemporary favorite is a balance between a classic round and uniform square and can be featured in a variety of engagement rings, although it is often associated with vintage-inspired designs.
Each of the 4Cs plays an important role when it’s time to buy diamonds. When selecting the right Cushion cut diamond for you, consider prioritizing cut and carat weight. With 77 brilliant cut facets, a Cushion is one of the most-faceted engagement ring diamond shapes; its cut should be excellent to fully highlight the “crushed ice” effect it is known for when reflecting light. Carat weight is also important. A Cushion’s deep cut can “hide” their carat weight, making them appear smaller from the top down.
Clarity is also important; a Cushion’s large open table can make inclusions more visible, so aim for VS clarity or above. Color depends on the metal setting you choose; a yellow gold engagement ring works well with near-colorless diamonds while platinum and white gold pair best with colorless stones.
Depth is an important factor when evaluating a diamond’s grade of cut and refers to a diamond’s measurement from top to bottom. Depth is expressed as a percentage that is calculated by dividing the diamond's total height by its total width. The ideal depth for a Cushion cut diamond is between 61 to 68 percent.
Cushion cut Round Brilliant diamonds share many of the same characteristics, particularly because they both feature brilliant cut facets. But a Cushion’s shape is slightly squared, whereas a Round Brilliant diamond is perfectly round. A Cushion cut diamond has a larger table, but they don’t necessarily appear larger than a Round Brilliant of the same carat weight. Their depth “hides” some of their carat weight, making them sometimes appear slightly smaller. Additionally, some perceive Round Brilliants as larger because of their brilliance.
In short, both diamond shapes are timelessly elegant, but a Round Brilliant is ideal for classic styles while a Cushion might be better suited for those wanting to buy an engagement ring that is vintage-inspired.
