Your choice of setting should be based entirely on personal preference and taste. However, because the Marquise is the most elongated of fancy shaped diamonds, there are some factors to consider.  If you are worried about snagging or scratching with the Marquise’s two pointed tips, consider a Signature Solitaire or a Signature Bezel in an East-West setting, as well as a Hover. These styles will turn the Marquise on its side, making it less likely to hit or snag.

A Marquise diamond is an elliptical diamond with distinctive points at either end. Its long and narrow shape can make it appear larger than other diamond shapes of the same carat weight. Engagement rings featuring a Marquise-shaped diamond can also make a finger appear longer and more slender. It is considered romantic, whimsical, and historically-inspired.

A marquise cut diamond is often associated with a “navette” or gondola-like shape, or with the shape of a smile. It’s said that the Sun King, Louis XV, requested a diamond shape that resembled his lover’s lips. A marquise diamond engagement ring is often worn by those with dramatic, bold, and romantic style. It is considered playful, whimsical, and flirtatious.

Art Deco engagement rings are some of the most sought-after vintage-inspired engagement rings today. For a stunning Art Deco Marquise ring, consider a Halo or Halo Dome setting, as well as a Graduated Band with a Marquise at its center.

As it is a reflection of your individual style, you should only buy an engagement ring based on personal preference. However, certain styles featuring Marquise-shaped diamonds have proven to be well-loved for years.

Marquise cut diamonds are known as “royal” due to their colorful past. In the 1700s, King Louis XV commissioned a jeweler to cut a diamond into the shape of his mistress Madame du Pompadour’s smile. “Marquise” is also a rank in French aristocracy, adding to the royal allure of this sought-after shape.

Marquise cut engagement ring benefits include making your fingers look longer and more slender. This is due to the Marquise’s elongated form, which draws the eye up instead of across the finger for a poised, elegant look.

The best settings for Marquise cut diamonds to protect them are expertly-crafted to secure them in place. The prong settings on certain Solitaire styles should be enough, but for those wanting extra protection, a Bezel setting might be their preferred choice.

The difference between Marquise cut vs Oval cut vs Pear cut diamonds is shape. All three are fancy shapes, meaning they are not a traditional Round. They also all feature brilliant cut facets. But for an Oval, both ends are rounded. For a Pear, one side is pointed while the other is rounded, and for a Marquise, both ends are pointed.

Marquise cut VRAI created diamonds, like all VRAI created diamonds, are grown in our zero-emission foundry that uses 100% renewable energy and has been certified carbon neutral since 2018.
