Can an Engagement Ring Have Multiple Stones?
Yes, an engagement ring can have multiple stones and often does. Solitaire engagement rings are not the only setting option. You can choose designs with multiple center stones, gemstones, or side stones. The Three Stone or the Toi et Moi are examples of popular multi-diamond settings.
Types of Multiple Stone Engagement Rings
There are several primary types of engagement ring designs with multiple diamonds.
- Toi et Moi: The Toi et Moi is a ring setting that features two diamonds of the same size, set directly next to each other. It symbolizes two becoming one, perfect for an engagement ring.
- Three Stone: Arguably the most popular multi-stone setting, the Three Stone is a historic design with one center diamond flanked by two slightly smaller side stones. The side stones are typically the same diamond shape, but they often contrast with the center shape. This setting symbolizes the past, present, and future.
- Five Stone: With an heirloom feel similar to the Three Stone, the Five Stone features four stunning side stones descending in carat weight. The center stone is framed in the middle.
Engagement rings with diamond embellishments or accents, such as a Halo setting, provide a subtle alternative to designs with multiple larger diamonds.

How to Choose a Multi-Stone Engagement Ring
If you’re considering a ring with multiple diamonds, or you’re not sure which design to choose, let the following tips guide you.
Consider Finger Size
“When it comes to multi-stone rings, your limiting factor is often finger size! A small-fingered person who wants a multi-stone look will often benefit from a Toi et Moi/two-stone style, or a Three Stone with petite side stones (0.10ct or 0.25ct). This is because you're going to run out of real estate faster with a smaller finger,” explains Grace Taylor, VRAI Sr. Director of Sales & CX. “Someone with a wider hand, or who likes a bolder style, will do well with a larger Three Stone (0.50ct side stones) or a Five Stone.”
“If you have less real estate (smaller, shorter, or narrower hands) but want a multi-stone look, it can be really cool to opt for a smaller center stone. This makes the ring appear more linear across the center and accent stones. For example, a Three Stone ring with 0.50ct side stones and a 0.1ct center diamond,” continues Taylor.
Narrow Down the Primary Diamond Shape
“My advice is to choose your center stone shape first. Different center stones look better with specific side stone shapes,” suggests Taylor.
Choose the center diamond shape that has the style, silhouette, and color grade you desire. Once you know the center diamond details, you can easily select the side stones.
Select Complementary Side Stones
Choose side stones that contrast cohesively or that have similar styles or silhouettes. The side stones should have comparable color and clarity grades to ensure eye-catching brilliance.
“Pear or Baguette side stones will give you a more vintage feel, whereas something like a Marquise, Oval, or Trillion side stone will feel more modern,” explains Taylor.
“If you can't choose just one side stone shape, designs with mixed shape side stones are a super cool way to incorporate a variety of different shapes into your piece. This will also feel a bit more unexpected,” continues Taylor.
Metal Considerations
Gold, platinum, rose gold - your choice of metal should support your lifestyle and style. Platinum has a bright white sheen that looks elegantly modern. White gold offers a slightly more affordable alternative to Platinum, with a comparable modern appearance. Yellow gold provides a classic, traditional warmth while rose gold is unique, romantic, and feminine.
With multi-diamond engagement rings, it’s even more essential to choose a metal color that complements the diamond grade. Colorless diamonds are better for platinum or white gold, while near colorless and below can pair better with yellow and rose gold.
Customization & Setting Options
If the classic multi-stone designs don’t suit your desires, consider a custom design. If you prefer a different type of setting, diamond combination, or an entirely bespoke design, creating a custom ring is best for you.
Pair With Lifestyle
Before you buy your multi-diamond ring, consider your lifestyle. Because these designs feature several beautiful diamonds, they do require a little more maintenance. To ensure your ring remains as brilliant and eye-catching as the day you bought it, you need to commit to regular cleaning at home.
